Leadwork Corrosion in Historic Buildings

There is an excellent performance record for lead used in historic buildings. Occasionally, it is susceptible to underside corrosion, which can cause premature failure.

In severe cases, lead corrosion can be identified by white stains or powder on the surface, severe ripples in the sheet where it has thinned, and holes that have developed.

It’s easy for underside lead corrosion to go undetected until it’s too late. As a result, corrosion often causes hidden damage that is not easily visible. When lead corrosion goes undetected, the building may suffer extensive damage, which may be expensive to repair.

Lead Flashing - Repair & Replacement

Lead flashing is often susceptible to fatigue cracks, especially in large sheets. These cracks can be caused by the thermal stresses that the metal is subjected to and can eventually lead to the metal breaking down.

Lead oxide can sometimes form on the surface of lead flashing, causing condensation problems. As a result, condensation may form on the lead surface due to the oxide restricting water vapour movement.

There are many different techniques that can be used to create decorative leadwork. One popular technique is to use a hammer and chisel to shape the lead into intricate designs. Another technique is to use a mould to create detailed designs.

Decorative leadwork can add a lot of character to a building and it can also help to protect the roof from weathering and corrosion.
